Application of a Universal Calibration Method for True Molar Mass Determination of Fluoro-Derivatized Technical Lignins by Size-Exclusion Chromatography

The determination of the true molar mass distribution (MMD) lignin is highly important to understand physicochemical characteristics for lignin-based value-added applications. It imperative develop a universal method quantify accurate MMD using size exclusion chromatography (SEC), as conventional with polymer standards provides irregular results. This work aims evaluate five samples (Protobind 1000, Organosolv, Indulin, Pine Kraft and Eucalyptus Kraft) in THF. Different derivatization methods (acetylation, fluorobenzylation fluorobenzoylation) were performed. FTIR 19F NMR analyses used follow derivatization. MMDs derivatized underivatized lignins determined by compared calibration developed intrinsic viscosity. spectra provided information degree substitution hydroxyl groups, calculate derivatives monomers. obtained values all found be three times higher than that calibration. polydispersity acetylation fluoro-derivatives. results demonstrated fluoro-derivatization an appropriate apply technical lacks solubility aggregation issues.
